I highly recommend this book series to all parents of gifted children. The parent section is thought-provoking and captures the essence of the joys and challenges parents and children face. The illustrations are wonderfully done and will appeal to the intended readers. Each story is followed by Child pages, with suggested activities for exploring the subject and Adult pages to help adults both understand these intensities and help the children they raise (or teach) deal with them and the social interactions the intensities create. The stories are simple and clear, but the implications are considerably more complex. Using five cheetah cub characters, each of whom represents one of these intensities, the stories explore how they affect both the children who have them and the other children they interact within their daily lives. There are people with the necessary expertise to assist when kids are in more trouble than these strategies can address.This series of five books for young gifted kids, Gifted Kid Book Series, is a delightful introduction to the five “overexcitabilities” that so often affect the life experiences of the gifted. Arrogance, perfectionism, and impatience can indicate more serious problems. Help kids learn that it’s usually better to wait until you’re asked before giving someone advice. It’s great to want to get things right, but not everyone likes being corrected. Some kids need help learning to say, “This is good enough for now it’s time to let it go.” Reassurance and encouragement go a long way toward ensuring that perfectionism is a positive attribute instead of a problem. Some mixed-ability group-work can be good, but it shouldn’t dominate. Many behaviours that look like problems can be prevented or fixed when kids get the right balance of high-level challenge and support. Work toward each child feeling valued for their unique abilities and interests. Create a safe environment, one that’s inclusive and respectful of diversity, including cognitive advancement.
